The UPS Foundation National Collaboration to Reduce Hunger & Improve Nutrition has provided Children's Hunger Alliance generous funding to promote and strengthen the Ohio Action for Healthy Kids (OAFHK) initiative to improve child health and educational performance through better nutrition and fitness. Specifically, 10 OAFHK zone teams use the funding to expand Ohio children's access to school breakfast, improve the quality of food offered to children in school and increase opportunities for physical activity outside the regular school day. Other benefits of the funding include an increased impact upon the health of kids, strengthened leadership and infrastructure at state and regional levels and pooled support and resources now available to zone teams. The UPS Foundation has provided funding to anti-hunger causes since its 2004 National Hunger Forum, hosted by The Congressional Hunger Center in Washington, D.C. At the forum, a diverse group of anti-hunger advocates discussed best approaches to reducing hunger in the U.S. Those discussions and a subsequent analysis inspired the UPS Foundation to direct funding to national efforts that address hunger by improving nutrition and reducing obesity among hungry Americans. |
In 2005, the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation awarded National Action for Healthy Kids a grant that provided enhanced technical assistance and support to help five state teams address the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on making positive changes in the school environment. Ohio Action for Healthy Kids used the funding to develop a parent resource kit, host speakers in the field, train zone leaders and mentors and orient new team members. The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation is committed to acting as a responsive, responsible corporate citizen. The multi-state entity supports charitable, civic, not-for-profit groups to benefit people of all walks of life. Specifically, the foundation gives priority to organizations that focus on building healthy minds, bodies and communities. |
