Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) was formed in 2002 following
the national Healthy Schools Summit in Washington, D.C.,
for which First Lady Laura Bush served as Honorary
Chairperson. The national-state effort, chaired by former
U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD, and
applauded by current Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona,
addresses childhood obesity by considering how changes in
school environment affects child health.
More than 40 national organizations, industry and government agencies representing education, fitness, nutrition and health collaborate to steer the national AFHK initiative. Participating organizations include the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of State Boards of Education, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the United States Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Education. |

Ohio Action for Healthy Kids (OAFHK) was formed in 2002 following the Healthy Schools Summit in Washington, D.C. The OAFHK team comprises child health and nutrition professionals, school personnel, parents and community leaders. In 2004, local workshops and meetings were held to gather local and state support and to develop a regional zone structure. In 2005, each zone team created an 18-month action plan to guide the implementation of their regional goals. This year, zone teams continue to meet on a regular basis, add new members and engage additional schools in OAFHK efforts. |
