For the last two years, Hale Road Elementary School's Physical Education teacher and Health Aide collaborated on a Health Fair as part of their Relay for Life day. The Health Fair incorporated 3 ten minute stations: one physical education station, one health education station, and one nutrition education station.
The first year, May 2006, the stations were:
- Station 1 (Physical Activity)- running laps around the gym.
- Station 2 (Health Education)- learning how their heart rate goes up with physical activity and how to take their pulse.
- Station 3 (Nutrition Education)- "Fruit and Veggie Fear Factor", students were shown different fruits and veggies they might not have seen before (ie. blood oranges, purple and yellow carrots, kumquats). They were given samples to taste, so the next time they were around a fruit or veggie they'd never eaten before they would maybe not "fear" it and at least try a little because they might like it!
The second year, May 2007, the stations were:
- Station 1 (Health Education) - "Sun Safety", students learned the importance of protecting eyes and skin from the sun with sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Station 2 (Physical Education)- "Obstacle Course", participated in a fun obstacle course to get the heart pumping
- Station 3 (Nutrition Education)- "Are You Smarter Than a Twinkie?", students were able to choose from different topics to learn what happens. An example of a topic area could be 5th Grade Biology and a sample quesiton is: After sitting at room temperature for a week, what happens to deep fried French fries(nothing) and fresh fruit (mold). Another topic included "3rd Grade Measurements" in which sugar was measured out to show the amounts in a 20 oz. soda, 3 chocolate chip cookies, and a bowl of Rice Krispies. Other program topics included "4th Grade Reading" (ie. Fat Content on milk labels), "1st Grade Science" (ie. Grease in chips and pretzels shown on brown paper towels), and more! Students were also given a healthy snack of low-fat strawberry yogurt with fresh fruit mixed in and topped with granola.
Plans are under way for the 3rd annual Health Fair at Hale Road in May 2008, in conjunction with their Relay for Life day. Staff and students have greatly enjoyed this fair and the success has been because of the planning of the Physical Education teacher, Cathy Pfingsten, and the Health Aide, Annette Schomburg, along with the support of the Building Principal, Jack Miley, and the Nutrition staff.
