The Osteopathic Heritage Foundation of Nelsonville (OHFN) has supported school health and obesity prevention in southeast Ohio through the development of school health councils, district wellness policies and wellness action plans in the Foundations' "Healthy & Fit in Southeastern Ohio" Initiative. The Foundation's approach with 7 southeast Ohio schools is a replicable model that ties school wellness activities, accomplishments, and outcomes to funding. The seven schools, located in three Appalachian counties (Athens, Morgan, and Vinton), are within some of the lowest income areas in Ohio. The Foundation is exploring expansion of the project to additional Southeastern Ohio counties. The Foundation Initiative is defined by multiple phases. In Phase 1, the Capacity Building Phase, OHFN supported seven school districts with an initial $10,000 grant to accomplish the following:
In Phase Two, the Implementation Phase, school districts received a $50,000 grant for implementation of programs, activities, capital equipment, and training priorities identified in the districts' wellness action plan. All seven districts participating in the "Healthy & Fit in Southeastern Ohio" Initiative were successful in securing Implementation grants, which will be used January 2007-December 2007. Successful grantees may have the opportunity for additional funding in 2008. The Foundation has engaged The Voinovich Center at Ohio University to conduct a multi-year external evaluation of the Initiative. The evaluation will examine intiative structure, district accomplishments and challenges, and the impact of the projects of the district. The coordinated school health model and the school health index for the basis of the evaluation indicators. The Foundation looks forward to sharing the results of the evaluation and the Initiative with others when available. Click here to view the Implementation Process Update |
