Edgerton Elementary School: Increasing Physical Education

Our health intiative for the 2006-07 school year focused on increased physical education activity. We participated in a number of activities that involved our students and staff. By information provided by the report of body mass index of Ohio third graders and information on the presidential physical fitness test, the team decided to focus on increasing physical activities in our school.

The students and teachers were excited about the various activities we completed. A visit to a local campground provided an afternoon of hiking for all of our students and staff. A parent spent the day at our school and involved all students and staff in aerobic activities with music. Our 4th grade teacher, who is also the head cross country coach, invited all staff members and students to warm-up and jog weekly with the high school team. Parents and community members became involved in this activity. All of these activities did not cost any money. Through a wellness grant, we were able to purchase pedometers for all of our 4th graders. As they totaled their mileage across the United States, geography/history lessons were included. Students plotted their steps on a daily basis.

We used pre/post test data from the presidential physical test as well as individual goals to evaluate this project. Our school definitely saw positive results. We had few obstacles in these activities.

Our plan for the 2007-08 school year is to continue many of these activities, provide additional activities during the winter months, and involve more community members.
