Hamden Elementary: Line-Dancing Towards Success

Childhood obesity, especially in the school setting, is of great concern. According to the BMI measurements taken at the elementary grade level over the last four years, the number of children at risk for overweight or obese is alarming. The need to offer more opportunities for physical activity was accomplished through a $500 SPCHEO Mini-Grant, which allowed students as well as staff, the opportunity to participate in weekly line-dancing classes. Fresh fruit and vegetables were offered as alternative snacks.

Students, as well as staff, joined the classes. One of our teachers, a line-dancing instructor, made the classes a success along with many volunteers, food service personnel, parents, and the school principal. Success was measured by parent surveys, class participation, and the disappearance of fresh fruits and vegetables.

There were few obstacles to overcome because of the enthusiasm. The greatest challenge was showing students that they could exercise and still have fun. The lessons learned from this project are self-explanatory. A problem was identified and a solution sought.

The best advice that can be offered is to follow your heart. If one knows a problem exists, find a way to solve it, no matter how long it takes. Write grants, seek counsel from others, ask for volunteers, and advocate for your students. Most importantly, do not ask someone else to do something that you are not willing to do.

Plans for the future will include line-dance classes and many other opportunities that increase physical activity. Our plan is to incorporate many suggestions and comments from parent surveys handed out during this project.
