Port Clinton City Schools: Asthma Education

We decided to educate teachers, staff, and students on the warning signs of a child having an asthma episode because we had a high percentage of children with asthma in one of our elementary schools. We also had a buddy system where we teamed a child with asthma with a non-asthma buddy in hopes that the children with asthma will learn they can complete physical activities like other children.

The impact has had a decrease in visits to the school nurse because the staff and students know the asthma triggers that bring on an asthma episode. We had the staff and students fill out a survey prior to instruction and a survey after the instruction to know the comprehension of the material covered.

Because we got a grant from the American Lung Association, we were able to implement with few obstacles. We learned there was a real need to educate our staff on this topic. We plan on continuing this project next year, but look at the self-esteem of these students and show students how to cope with having asthma.
