Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools: Wellness Policies in Action Sponsored by Ohio AFHK Zone 8 The conference took place on Thursday, February 14, 2008 and was a huge success. We need to thank everyone in attendence for their contribution and helping us spread the work of Ohio Action for Healthy Kids. There were about 180 people in attendence, including school educators, health professionals, state agency personnel and community members. A special thanks goes out to the conference speakers for introducing new concepts and resources that will be shared in schools throughout the state. Conference Details Welcome & Introduction to Ohio Action for Healthy Kids Speaker: Jan Ritter, Ohio Action for Healthy Kids Zone 8 Leader Jan Ritter opened the Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools: Wellness Policies in Action Conference by welcoming the attendees and introducing the concepts behind Ohio Action for Healthy Kids. Coordinated School Health: The Real Education Reform Speaker: Patrick Cooper, Ed. D Dr. Patrick Cooper currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the New Orleans based Early Childhood and Family Learning Foundation. Just prior to that appointment, he served as the Superintendent of Schools in McComb, MS. He served in that capacity for ten years and is in his thirty-sixth year of public education service. The School's Role in Healthy and Fit Speaker: Robert Murray, M.D. Dr. Robert Murray is a professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University. He is Director of the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition at Nationwide Children's Hospital. He is the chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on School Health, and is their representative to the National Action for Healthy Kids Initiative. 5 Minute Energizers Speaker: Jennifer Kuck Jennifer Kuck is an Exercise Physiologist (and soon to be Dietitian) that specializes in Child and Family Weight Management & Cardiovascular Disease. She shared some 5 Minute Energizers for the attendees to use during the school day to get students up Making the Grade with Diet and Exercise Speaker: Tom Yazvac Tom Yazvac is the Principal and Administrative Assistant at Springfield Local Elementary School. He is actively involved with the SLES Health Team, Ohio Public Health Leadership Institute (OPHLI), and Action for Healthy Kids. He has coordinated an exercise and breakfast program to promote healthy choices and lifestyles. Lunch with Agent Good Green Speaker: Rob Wahl Agent Good Green is the super eco-agent in charge of protecting healthy living for our homes, our town, our planet and ourselves. He works with The CW on WWHO-TV to promote healthy living. Agent Good Green travels to schools to educate students on the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles into their daily routine. Speakers: Connie Codispoti & Denise Tabar Connie Codispoti (MS, RD, LD) is a Public Health Dietitian with the Delaware General Health District. She has years of experience in this field and have spent the last seven years focusing on childhood obesity prevention programming and coordinated school health and nutrition. Denise Tabar (MS, RD, LD) is the Food Service Director at Olmsted Falls City School. She has thirteen years of administrative and leadership experience in federally funded child nutrition programs. She currently manages 26 food service staff personnel, while also initiating a breakfast program throughout the school district. Assessment & Fitness to Promote Physical Ed Speakers: Patti Wilson Patti Wilson is a member of the academic teaching staff at Otterbein College's Health and Sport Sciences Department. Her presentation focused on the academic integration of physical activities. Parents and Wellness: A Natural Fit Speakers: Sandra Nekoloff, Mary Chace & Stephanie Leach Sandra Nekoloff is the Executive Director of Communications and Community Relations for South-Western City Schools and President of the Ohio PTA. Her presentation introduced the resources available through the National PTA and Ohio PTA and explained how to connect with school boards, school administration, businesses and community members. Mary Chace (Ph.D, MPH, CHES) volunteers as the Wellness Team Coordinator at Norwich Elementary School in the Hilliard City School District. She presented specific examples of how parents are involved in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of wellness efforts at one local school and explained the progession of a school wellness team into an existing PTA. Stephanie Leach is a Parent Consultant at Gables Elementary School (Columbus Public Schools). She shared information on how parents can initiate and support programs at school to increase exercise/ physical activity and focus on overall health and wellness. Tastes for the Future Speakers: Terrie Miller & Melissa Wade Terrie Miller is the Food Service Director at Northern Local School District. She presented the benefits that the MEC/ EPC Commodity Program can offer other school districts, such as the healthy items that are available through the Co-op. Melissa Wade filled in for Jerry McDonald, who was unable to attend, and presented on his behalf. Chef Jerry is the Founder and Corporate Executive Chief of KOMAZA LLC and works with Columbus Public Schools' Healthy & Fit Initiative. Safe Routes to School Speaker: Meghan Estes Meghan Estes is the Acting Director of Health Promotion and Program Manager of Steps to a Healthier Cleveland at Cleveland Department of Public Health. Her presentation addressed the successes and barriers that surround these strategies regarding her experience in Cleveland. Nutrition and Fitness for After School Programs Speakers: Paul Branscum, Amy Kiger & Becky Ciminillo Paul Branscum represented The Ohio State University- Department of Human Nutrition. He spoke about the design and teaching methods behind Food Fit, outcomes of the implementation of this program and the dietary behaviors that were addressed. Amy Kiger coordinates the USDA After-School Meal Program at Children’s Hunger Alliance. She explained the Child and Adult Care Food Program and other USDA-reimbursed meal programs. Becky Ciminillo is the Executive Director of Child Care at the YMCA of Central Ohio. She presented the Y-Kids Are Fit curriculum which is a health, fitness and nutrition curriculum created and designed for after school program providers.
